CHIC featuring Nile Rodgers to Replace D'Angelo.

D'Angelo, the neo-soul singer, was scheduled to play friday of Outside Lands 2013, but due to a medical emergency had to cancel his appearance and several other tour dates. Outside Lands managed to score big and get CHIC to fill in. This is pretty incredible, seeing as how recent CHIC setlists have included some pretty big hits, and manage to end with "Get Lucky". Other hits in the setlist could include "We Are Family" a Sister Sledge cover, "Notorious" Duran Duran cover, and "Let's Dance" David Bowie cover. So much for camping out at the mainstage from The National on...

OSL 2013 Set Times

So I am a bit behind on this, but Outside Lands came out with their set times last week:

So the set times themselves are roughly what I was expecting, choosing between two or more artists playing at the same time is part of the whole large festival experience, and sometimes it just sucks.
My theoretical schedule is going to go something like:

Friday:
Foy Vance -> Midi Matlida or Smith Westerns -> Wild Belle -> Jessie Ware -> Twenty One Pilots -> maybe the beginning of Rhye -> The National w/ Kronos Quartet -> and then make a game time decision based on the main stage crowd and either go to D'Angelo or Wavves before -> PAUL MCCARTNEY
I was really hoping to catch Yeasayer and Chromatics and all of Rhye and Zedd, but you know how it goes.

Saturday:
Social Studies -> either The Lone Bellow or Cherub -> Gary Clark Jr. -> and then not sure which of these three, Young the Giant, The Growlers, and Youth Lagoon -> Jurassic 5 -> Yeah Yeah Yeahs -> NINE INCH NAILS
again depending on the crowds and whatnot, Between J5 and YYYs might see The Tallest Man on Earth, and between YYYs and NIN might see The Head and the Heart.

Sunday:
Not sure about the early afternoon, haven't done the research yet, but...
Little Green Cars -> RUDIMENTAL -> FOALS -> either Emeli Sande or Trombone Shorty -> Daryl Hall and John Oates -> A-TRAK -> maybe some MS MR before -> Vampire Weekend -> Matt and Kim -> Red Hot Chili Peppers and depending upon if I can walk away from RHCP some Kaskade.
And no, I didn't accidentally hit caps lock, those are bands that I am extra excited for.

I'll start spotlighting some of these artists this week, but there you go! If you need a place to start listening to OSL artists start from the headliners and go backwards,

TIMF 2013

TIMF 2013 was announced early Tuesday morning, and the festival organizers never fail to build a unique festival that showcases new bands, new sounds, or some good old acts that have been collecting dust but are about to come out of hiding and hit the ground running.

This years lineup has some great acts that have been making a big splash; James Blake, Little Dragon, Sleigh Bells, Disclosure, DJ Falcon, Palma Violets, Poolside (pun intended there...), and Robert DeLong.

James Blake has been touring pretty hard the past few years, and now has another album out to tour behind for the next few years, Overgrown. He's a great producer and singer, but with a full live band, he really gets the crowds moving.

Little Dragon and Phantogram have actually both been at the festival before, and in fact, played on the same Saturday back in 2010, which was a pretty great year with Miike Snow, Deadmau5, and the last west coast tour date ever from LCD Soundsystem. Both artists, Little Dragon and Phantogram, have said they are working on new material, and Phantogram's new album should definitely be out before the festival this year as they have been tweeting about, "final days in the studio" recently.

Sleigh Bells are an intense live experience, and to see them on the island will just be pure energy.

DISCLOUSRE are two brothers from the UK making some amazing beats. Getting great guest vocalists on your singles and EPs before you even release a debut album is pretty cool, but behind those vocals are some of the catchiest hooks and synths and sounds I've heard in a while. These guys will not disappoint and are probably my number one most anticipated act on the lineup this year. And their debut album, Settle, drops in four days!

DJ Falcon, has been around for a while, but with his collaboration on Daft Punk's "Contact" I'm sure he will be shoved into the spotlight. This french guy will bring some funk, some awesome french electro, and be a dancing good time.

Poolside is the collaboration of Jeffery Paradise and Filip Nikolic into summertime music, and its just blissed-out for great weather, good company, and friendly vibes.

Robert DeLong, is an up and coming solo artist, heavy on the effects with some really catchy tunes. He has turned some video game controllers into his effects pads and uses those live, its jumpy, fun and pretty loud, "Did I play my songs too loud? Did I leave my life to chance? Or did I make you f*cking dance?" Yes, Doubtful, Yes. He recently released his debut album, Just Movement, in mid April.

Atoms for Peace, Thom Yorke's other band, recently released their first collaborative album(some of the members of Atoms for Peace have performed with Thom Yorke when he was touring behind his solo album), AMOK, and have yet to announce a full North American tour behind it other than a handful of performances. These guys will end up headlining Saturday night of TIMF, so that's pretty exclusive.

Beck will be headlining Sunday night, and has been working on a new album since 2008, lets hope it comes out sometime this year. Beck fits Treasure Island pretty well, as he has bridged the gap between purely acoustic and some electronic tinkering nicely, something TIMF itself has been doing since it inaugural year in 2007. For its first year the two day festival decided to have Thievery Corporation headline its "electronic and rap" Saturday, and Modest Mouse headline the "indie and alternative rock" Sunday. I put those genres in quotes because music really hasn't been easy to fit into a single genre or category for years, and Treasure Island surly has not stayed within those guidelines, which in my humble opinion is great!

Anyways back to this year, Major Lazer and Animal Collective round out the top of the poster. Major Lazer has undergone some changes since its inception as the island sound side project of Diplo and Switch. They no longer have daggering stunt people, and Switch left the group near the end of 2011. Diplo has maintained the project, and the second album Free the Universe, which had multiple release date push backs, was finally released in mid April. Animal Collective have been known to craft an intricate and very psychedelic, seizure inducing, stage setup, and I will be pretty interested to see what they bring to the island.

And digging into the unfamiliar artists, ADULT. and Tricky stand out. ADULT. is a husband and wife duo from Detroit making some dark synth, and it sounds pretty cool. Oh and these guys have also made 3 campy horror films apparently, will have to do more research. Tricky defies genres, he raps a bit, makes some killer beats, and has had a lot of guest appearances on his records and has done a bunch of guests on others. Oh and apparently he's also an actor? I guess its not enough to just be making music for the last decade+ with these two, they need to get the camera involved somehow.

So that leaves:
Holy Ghost! who are coming out with a new album, Dynamics;
STRFKR, who came out with their fourth album earlier this year, Miracle Mile, and have a powerful live energy;
Japandroids have been making festival appearances, and have two pretty good rock albums behind their name;
Real Estate, a indie rock group I will have to delve more into, but who sound good on first listen;
Lord Huron, whose front man has quite a pretty voice;
Haim, the all girl rock band, getting tons of attention lately;
Palma Violets, the loud almost punk rockers who have opened for Franz Ferdinand and did a good job;
Cayucas, a beachy outfit who don't particularly sound like other California beach surf rockers;
IO Echo, a slow building indie duo, with a new album, Ministry of Love, out at the beginning of April;
Giraffage, the  bedroom producer who actually creates sets on the fly and manages to keep his hands almost always on the knobs;
Deep Sea Diver, another husband and wife duo, but this time of the awesome drumming and great vocals indie variety; and
Antwon, a break out hip hop artist rapping about death, food, and well obviously women.

Oh and this is the first year that TIMF did not divide the lineup into who was playing which day, and might have something to do with them also not mentioning anything about single day tickets and prices being increased by $20 this year(from 129.50 for the 2 day pass in the final tier last year to 150 this year). Which means that I will end this post with a prediction:

Coachella 2013

Finally, the lineup is out! The daily breakdown makes this the biggest Coachella yet, with 56 artists on Friday, 62 on Saturday, and 58 on Sunday. The bill is stacked, with reunions ranging from Jurassic 5 to The Postal Service to Wu Tang Clan. I'll get right into the research and start having some smaller bands in my posts starting this weekend! With a mere 78 days until the festival, we all have a lot of homework and research to do.
